The choices for the template author are simply between whether to use a movie - such as a Quicktime movie file - or a tmv file. There are both advantages and disadvantages to using TMV's, but the correct choice can make a significant difference.

TMV files are stored in RAM and loaded at start-up of the project. Voluminous and multiple TMV files in a project will subtract the equivalent memory resources from the renderer.
Video files are not the same in this respect: Video files stream directly from disk and take up very little RAM resource on start up.
